Food Around the World: ITALY

Presents:foodaround theworld2

Today I have with me the lovely Kelly of Belle of the Literati! She’ll be sharing some of the foods that are most popular (& delicious) in Italy!

And now, Kelly will take over!

My family is Sicilian (and the rest of my heritage is Eastern European mutt but I digress) and I have grown up surrounded by my crazy and very stereotypical Sicilian grandmother, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Pasta and sauce is learning how to make your own is a right of passage. Here are my favorites but don’t ask for the recipe…if I tell you, I’ll have to kill you :)

The Main Events

  Penne All-arrabbiataFood Penne All'arrabbiata

Basically spicy pasta. It is a right of passage in our family to learn how to make your own sauce from scratch. Every one of my aunts, uncles, my grandmother and great-grandmother all have the same recipe…but add their own little flavor to it. No joke, I could blind taste test sauce made by any member of my family and I could tell you whose sauce it is. I have friends that have had my sauce and every time they will be home ask me to make it. I will be wrangling in my husband with this cooking. Wait and see.

Food LasagnaLasagna

Special occasions such as Christmas Day and maybe the Super Bowl are reasons for us the bust out the lasagna trays. Whether with meat or cheese, this dish is something my cousins and I will stab each other with forks over. The noodles and cheese and meat, I’m salivating thinking of it. Add some Italian bread–fuggedaboutit.

Food Chicken ParmeseanChicken Parmesan

Chicken breaded with parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning topped with noodles makes me drool just thinking about it. This was an absolute staple growing up.

And now onto..

Anybody that knows me knows I have a HUGE sweet tooth. Especially for cake but that is another whole story.

SfingiFood Sfingi

THIS is something we hardly ever make because it is a huge pain in the ass but it is DECLICIOUS! We have an Italian festival every summer and I LIVE for this dessert. Basically a deep-fried, sugared ball of dough. Drool. It is amazingly tasty.

Food GelatoGelato

Can we even mention Italian food without talking about gelato. The village of Monreale outside of Sicily has THE BEST gelato ever! My cousin took me there and they have every dessert imaginable and I was in a sugar coma all day. It makes ice cream look like a chum

And to finish it off right..

Food Italian Chocolate Chip

Another treat we get intermittently throughout the year. We buy them from this special Italian bakery downtown and they rock my socks. Sweet, flaky with a cherry topping it off. It is so freakin’ good and don’t let the cheese filling scare you or fool you. It is so freakin’ good!

OH MY Kelly! You have made me so hungry!  I need some Penne and Gelato, ASAP.  AND of course, one of my faves, a cannoli!

  6. All I have to eat for a snack right now are almonds and my stomach is sad because this post is so yummy. I love that you have the sauce family tradition. That is so sweet. There are a few things in our family that my mom has her own secret recipe for — her Thanksgiving stuffing for example — and I’m hoping she will share it with me someday. (But someone else needs to make the turkey.)

James loves loves loves cannolis. I cannot get into them but I do like the sound of that other dessert. 😉
