Thursday Thought: Adult Fiction Lovin’

This week we’re talkin: ADULT BOOKS

What about the YA?

I still love YA. I think that I really am fifty fifty with my reads at this point though. And this comes about a few times a year where I just want to be like.. Let me read adult fiction. I know Asheley at Into The Hall of Books feels similarly, from this post she wrote.

And do you ever feel like people dismiss you faster if you’re reading adult books?

But, this time it’s more about me wanting to know who ELSE is reading adult.  I know that Estelle reads tons as well as Hannah, Asheley and Christina. But who else?  As a side-note, I am very, very thankful for those of you who REVIEW adult books, and also for features like The Big Kid’s Table over at Rather Be Reading! I LOVEEE that feature so much! [& myself and Hannah have been featured!] I look forward to it each month!

And now… WHAT are you reading?

Tell Me Some Golden Books!

Obviously I raved over Nowhere But Home yesterday, but that doesn’t mean I know ALL the good adult books. Adult fiction is even harder to rummage through than YA cuz there’s just SO MUCH. So go ahead, tell me some of your current reads, what you have loved, and even what everyone should avoid! I recently found some Amish thrillers by Linda Castillo has anyone tried them out? I’d love to know!

One Last Thing..

Before I leave you, here is:

  1. This post couldn’t have come at a better time. I was such a huge Adult fiction fan and I’m really starting to miss it. I read All the Summer Girls recently and it reignited my love for Adult contemporary. I’m obsessed with all things Amish so have added the Linda Castillo books to my TBR and I’ve bought the first 3 Lucky Harbor after I saw you and Jamie talk about them on Twitter! I figure you didn’t steer me wrong with the Paperwhite, you won’t steer me wrong with what goes on it ;-P

    • You’re precious :)

I haven’t read All the Summer Girls – now I have to stalk and see if you reviewed it!

I need to try out the Castillo books, they have great reviews! And LUCKY HARBOR YAY!!! I read the first and bought 2&3 in the sale, so excited!

  2. I’m a HUGE fan of Adult novels – haha, lately it seems I’ve been reviewing more Adult than YA. Before I got into blogging I ONLY read Adult, mostly thrillers/mysteries and recently I’ve been getting into contemporary & fiction.

How was Me Before You??? A few weeks ago I read The Girl You Left Behind and was floored. I’ve been keeping an eye out for her other books since finishing. It was seriously that fantastic.

Other fab adult reads these past few months have been The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon, The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic by Emily Croy Barker, Life After Life by Kate Atkinson, & A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki – I’ve probably recommended this & Life After Life to more people than any other books I’ve read in the past few years. They were INCREDIBLE.

B.A. Shapiro’s The Art Forger was one I read last year but I STILL think about it and have been aching for a re-read.

Diane Chamberlain & Kristan Higgins are always great too.

    • I loved Me Before You! SO SO MUCH.

I bought The Bone Season on Kindle and can’t wait! And I also own [but haven’t read] Life After Life.

Hmmm never heard of The Art Forget but I do have Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain waiting for me!

Thank you for the WONDERFULLY informative comment!!

      • AAAHH! DEF starting with Me Before You then! I was seriously starry-eyed the entire time I read The Girl You Left Behind. More than once I became overly excited about it at work and I think I might have scared a few customers into buying it.

Although thrillers & general fiction are awesome, my super guilty pleasure is a good cozy mystery. Whether it’s a classic Agatha Christie or something silly like a book in the Coffeehouse/Donut Shop/A Candy Shop series, I know I’m in for some good, light-hearted fun. Daphne mentioned both Janet Evanovich & Lisa Lutz – their series are cozies!

        :) aw shucks, thank you!

        • YES! Its so lovely!!

  3. Young adult books tend to have plots that interest me more, so I tend to read more of them. (My YA and adult shelves on Goodreads are about 2:1, I think.) But I do read and love adult books just as equally. The target audience doesn’t matter for me – just the quality of the writing and story. I find it quite hypocritical of readers to write off adult fiction completely when they beg adult readers not to write off young adult fiction.

    • SO well stated, Nikki! I agree 110%!

I love both as well, just sometimes the mood strikes more for one than the other!

  4. i read mostly adult fiction. right now i’m going through beth harbinson’s backlist because i read & reviewed her newest and i picked up another one on audio for a road trip this weekend & loved it. i also love Lisa Lutz, Janet Evanovich, Emily Giffin, Meg Cabot’s adult books, Liza Palmer, Jane Porter, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Jill Shalvis, Kristan Higgins, Mary Kay Andrews, Macy Beckett, Lori Foster…I could go on and on and on. Most of the adult stuff I read is romance (like 99%). And this doesn’t include my favorite historical romance books.

  5. I’ve been venturing into the adult section a bit more lately…. checking out some NA, but also anything else that jumps out at me! I’m not nearly as familiar with authors as YA though, so it can be a little intimidating! You know my secret… the author I have a secret obsession with. bahaha Shhh! Anyway, glad you posted this- and even more glad that Daphne commented– she knows good books! Def jotting down some of her suggestions!

    • YES! i know your dirty secret! [what else is new??]

Yes LOTS of good recs from Daphne!

  6. Okay, so I’ve bookmarked this post because I want to creep back later and see what books other people are recommending and I also want to check out that Goodreads list that you linked.

Right now, I’m re-reading GAP CREEK by Robert Morgan – I’ve read pretty much all of his books but I feel like he’s pretty not-as-known as I think he should be. I LOVE HIM. I’m also reading The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley but I’ve just started it and this type of historical fiction is sort of new to me, so I’m not rushing thru it as quickly as I am other things. (I read a ton of books at the time.)

Letters From Skye by Jessica Brockmole is one that I’ve read recently that I absolutely adored and loved and it made my hug my Kindle, no kidding. But I’m a sucker for that type of story. I’ve just read/listened to the three prequels for Jason Mott’s The Returned (free for Kindle/Audible) but I haven’t started the actual novel itself yet. SOON.

I’m just sitting here looking around me and I have so many adult fic titles pulled off of my shelves to hopefully read soon that it would be silly to mention them all, but I’m so excited that people are reading them too AND talking about them more it seems, and that it’s more than just YA out there, and that people get excited about the whole tootin’ library. It makes me talk in rambly sentences, you see. I’m sad that I’ve not been talking about the adult titles on my blog the entire time, so that’s the reason for the re-reads because I’ve read some SUPER GREAT stuff that I just feel like people don’t really know about and would really enjoy! So yeah, this comment was totally unhelpful right now, but I’ll be back and I’m blogging my adult fiction titles now too so YAY for that! LOVE THIS.

    • You’re so adorable :)

Thank you for mentioning all the titles you did! That one Letters from Skye I was eyeing down! I have The Returned, I had NO idea there were prequels!

PS- never heard of Robert Morgan :-X

  7. One of my bookish resolutions this year was to read more adult titles. I’ve only read a handful so far, but am currently in the middle of Wally Lamb’s newest book, which is reminding me all over again just how much I love adult lit, especially since he was one of the first adult writers that I read as a teen!

  8. I think it’s ironic that in everyday life adults who read YA may be looked down upon, but with blogging it seems to be the opposite. Well, I don’t think adults who don’t read YA as much are looked down upon necessarily, but they do seem to be outside of the norm here. I’ve had a much easier time finding YA book blogs than those dedicated to the kinds of adult books I enjoy reading. I love YA and read a ton of it, but I also like adult books, particularly when it comes to subject areas such as historical fiction.
I think ALA has some of the better lists when it comes to good adult fiction. In particular, I really like the ALEX Awards, which are given to adult books that contain crossover appeal for young adults.

  9. I think you know how I feel about this topic. I don’t think people should discriminate when it comes to book genres and remain open minded. There is so much to love out there! Thanks for the shout outs. I so appreciate it. xo

    • I SO AGREE. every word.

NO need to thank me 😉 I got you!

  10. I love adult fiction too! I got in a reading slump with it for a while because I had read so many just so/so adult books. That was around the time that I found YA book blogs, and after I discovered those, I read nothing but YA for about 2 years. Now that so many of my favorite YA book bloggers have started reviewing adult books every now and then, I have read some excellent adult fiction lately. ON THE ISLAND is fantastic. And ME BEFORE YOU… I finished it yesterday, and I still get tears in my eyes when I think about it! It’s rare that a book leaves such a lasting impression, but I can promise that Will and Lou are forever in my heart <3. I also adored THE HELP. And Nora Roberts was my first love in the adult fiction world. I still devour all of her books, especially when I need a breather from the more emotional books :) I also brought Lauren Graham's SOMEDAY, SOMEDAY MAYBE home from work with me the other day; I hope I have a chance to read it soon. Have you read it? If so, what were your thoughts on it??

  11. I do miss reading adult books! I used to read a lot more of them, but right now I’m primarily focused on YA stuff. Still, I enjoy seeing recommendations from you, Estelle, Asheley and Hannah!

  12. Well, you already know how I feel about this topic! Adult fiction was my first love, and I’ve slowly been bringing more balance to my current reads. It was skewed towards young adult for a while, which was fun and a nice change of pace. But…. I’ve been missing my big kids reads! The thing I love about adult reads is that they typically take me a little longer to read, so I get even more reading enjoyment out of them. Sometimes I tear through a YA book and am sad that there isn’t more/it went by so quickly.

I, like others have mentioned, hate when people judge adult fiction but get ranty about people not judging young adult. There are awesome books in ALL categories! No reason to make sweeping generalizations and disregard them completely.

It makes me so happy that so many primarily YA bloggers seem to be rediscovering their love or interest in adult reads! It means I’m finding that many more books to read & add to my TBR!

  13. Love this topic Cass :) (I am slowly but surely getting to your older posts I haven’t read yet, lol). It’s so funny that now I hardly pick up adult fiction but before Twilight, then a LONG four year break of not reading YA, then I picked up The Hunger Games and it’s been YA ever since… although I only ever used to read adult fiction! Ok… that sentence doesn’t even make sense but I’m too tired to correct it lol.. you’re used to my nonsense 😛 I read a lot of Chicklit because it’s lighthearted and romantic, but I’m also getting away from that a bit. Read Lisa Scottoline :) She’s amazing!!!
