Queenie Wake, a country girl from North Star, Texas, has just been fired from her job as a chef for not allowing a customer to use ketchup. Again. Now the only place she has to go is home to North Star. She can hope, maybe things will be different. Maybe her family’s reputation as those Wake women will have been forgotten. It’s been years since her mother-notorious for stealing your man, your car, and your rent money-was killed.
And her sister, who as a teenager was branded as a gold-digging harlot after having a baby with local golden boy Wes McKay, is now the mother of the captain of the high school football team. It can’t be that bad… Who knew that people in small town Texas had such long memories? And of course Queenie wishes that her memory were a little spottier when feelings for her high school love, Everett Coburn, resurface. He broke her heart and made her leave town-can she risk her heart again? At least she has a new job-sure it’s cooking last meals for death row inmates but at least they don’t complain!
But when secrets from the past emerge, will Queenie be able to stick by her family or will she leave home again? A fun-filled, touching story of food, football, and fooling around.
Welcome to North Star, Y’all!
Hmm. With a name like Queen Elizabeth Wake, you are destined to be great, yes? Okay.. maybe not. In a tough city like New York, and a tough industry such as the CULINARY industry… things get tricky. Even moreso when you give an attitude to patrons. And more than that when it seems your creativity is not showing much..
Its time to go home. At least temporarily, there’s nothing left in this city for Queenie, and she at least has her sister, Merry Carole, and nephew Cal at home. She also has a boatload of a past to get home to..
This will get interesting. Welcome to Footballville.. I mean.. NORTH STAR.
Perfection. Nothing Further.
A supremely largeee thank you to Hannah for telling me I must read this. She’s never been so right.
I can’t even. This is going to just be my fangirling over EVERY aspect of this book.
We have FOOD. Literally, a meal at the top of every chapter. I got QUITE hungry while reading! [Hence the cheesecake I downed while reading..]
We have TEXAS. Not even just Texas but FOOTBALL TEXAS. Like, reminiscent of Friday Night Lights, (which thanks to Jamie making me watch that show, I now reallyyy love and appreciate seeing football in a Texas town in a novel!)
What else? Secrets. Southern town filled with secrets, lies, and gossip. We’ve all seen the gossip mill do its number on people, especially it seems in the South where word travels fast, and your business is never simply your own. But its also reality. Merry Carole tries to protect her son, Cal from this side of North Star, but sometimes it gets hard. And on top of that, Queenie takes a temporary job that is.. to say the leeasttt gossip worthy. While to some it may seem nuts, to her it makes sense, and that is what she tries to convey. *More power, girl!*
In the midst of all this cooking, and Southern atmosphere, and FOOTBALL, there is heart, & there are sisters at their very finest, friendship coming up from the ruins and there is love. So much. When the past gets you down, sometimes the Wake sisters have to find a way to try to look to the future. If they can do this, they can finally achieve their goal of being happy. Even in North Star, Texas.
A very favorite. Every element was PERFECTION. I literally could not have asked for more from this novel! I ran RIGHT OUT to grab More Than her by Liza Palmer from the library & am ordering my PB of this one immediately! [I had the kindle version]
