Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour
by: Morgan Matson
Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew–just in time for Amy’s senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she’s always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy’s mother’s old friend. Amy hasn’t seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she’s surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she’s coming to terms with her father’s death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road–diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards–this is the story of one girl’s journey to find herself.
A note, I’m not much for sugar. So lots of these are salty treats, but I LOVE THEM. YUM YUM YUM! Muncho’s by the way, bring me BACK to 8th grade lol. Xtremes ROCK, they’re the only sweet snack on here! And flipz are the BEST for the salty/sweet combo! And don’t forget a CUP for your pistachio shells! Or… like 15.
What? Okay. Rockstar is easy to get your hands on, and it WORKS. This is the ONLY one I like cuz why? Duh. Its coffee flavor. McDonalds has DOLLAR COFFEE, that is GOOD. I swear by it, especially for my wallet’s sake when I’m road trippin! And finallllyy.. rest stop commodity of the world.. STARBUCKS. I choose my iced vanilla chai!
I have road tripped it to West Virginia.. I believe .. three times? Each time it was a new adventure! But, the first time I did it I was with three friends and our memory? A-the TUNES. Come on, we all love music! And b- two of my friends getting speeding tickets within FIVE MINUTES of each other! Thankfully, neither was when I was driving but I mean these were HEFTY tickets, but it made for QUITE the story. Plus, it made it all the better that once we FINALLY arrive at WVU, my brother had pizza ready, and a party in tow for our arrival!
Also, my WVU adventures wouldn’t be complete without several vists to…
-Never turn OFF the music.
-Never have ONE person drive for more than 4 hours. [You don’t wanna crash!]
-Never spend a lot of money on food. Get over it, its gonna be JUNK FOOD.
-ALWAYS have a few DANCE PARTIES. Car style dance parties ROCK.
-ALWAYS make some unexpected pit stops! They make for great fun!
